The function of an anvil is to provide support for the cutting edge of the insert at the same time it locates the insert to the designed place on the holder. Anvils are usually of two shapes, the dovetail style (shown) or flat. They are case hardened to allow impact resistence but stand up to excessive wear externally. The pocket for the insert is ground to +0.0002" / -0.0000".
